Beyond the Backup: Your Home Is Now a Power Plant

US residential energy storage expanded significantly in 2025, driven by a combination of expiring fiscal incentives and the growth of programs that integrate home batteries into the wider electrical grid.

The US residential segment added 3.1 gigawatt-hours of new capacity last year, a 51 per cent increase over 2024 levels, according to data from the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) and Benchmark Mineral Intelligence. This growth contributed to a record 57.6 gigawatt-hours of total storage installed across the country, a 30 per cent rise on the previous annual record.

The surge was partially attributed to homeowners seeking to secure the 25D federal tax credit before its scheduled expiration. However, the data also reveals a structural shift in how these assets are utilised through virtual power plants (VPPs). These platforms, now operating in states such as Massachusetts, Texas, Arizona, and Illinois, allow homeowners to provide stored energy back to the grid during periods of high demand in exchange for compensation.

For utilities and grid operators, these aggregated residential systems offer a flexible alternative to traditional power plants and expensive transmission upgrades. The shift moves the domestic battery beyond its traditional role as a simple backup power source into a functional component of grid infrastructure.

Industry analysts suggest that the rise of VPPs is establishing the commercial framework for broader acceptance of energy storage services. While the SEIA expects total US deployments to reach 70 gigawatt-hours in 2026, residential growth is projected to moderate as the immediate impact of the tax credit surge fades.

Nonetheless, Benchmark Mineral Intelligence expects that improving battery economics and the continued expansion of VPP programs will maintain demand. The convergence of consumer behavior and market design remains a critical factor for the long-term outlook of the energy storage sector, potentially influencing the adoption of longer-duration technologies.
